TRR259 - Aortic Disease
The TRR259 is a Collaborative Research Center funded by the German Research Foundation (DFG) at the University Bonn, Cologne, and Düsseldorf. In a joint and multidisciplinary effort, we are investigating the molecular and cellular mechanisms of aortic disease holistically, with a particular focus on aortic valve stenosis, aortic aneurysm, and aortic dissection. Prospectively, we envision identifying novel pharmacological, interventional, and surgical targets for diagnostic, preventive, and therapeutic strategies within the frame of translational and clinical studies.

At the 40th Annual Conference of the German Society for Vascular Surgery and Medicine (DGG), Prof. Dr. med. Markus Wagenhäuser from Düsseldorf was awarded the prestigious Aortic Award. His outstanding scientific work on the project titled “Crosstalk of platelets with macrophages and fibroblasts aggravates inflammation, aortic wall stiffening, and osteopontin release in abdominal aortic aneurysm” was recognized for its groundbreaking contributions to vascular medicine.
At the 40th Annual Conference of the German Society for Vascular Surgery and Medicine (DGG), Dr. med. Joscha Mulorz from Düsseldorf was honored with the Science Award for his exceptional research. His project, titled “E-cigarette exposure augments murine abdominal aortic aneurysm development: role of Chil1,” was recognized for its innovative approach and significant contributions to vascular health research.
We are pleased to announce the 5th International Symposium titled "New mechanistic insights into aortic diseases. From molecular mechanisms to clinical applications." The event will take place from April 7-9, 2025 at the Universitätsclub Bonn.
On September 26th, 2024, Prof. Dr. Dimitrios Tsiantoulas from the Medical University of Vienna joined the TRR259 community at Heinrich Heine University Düsseldorf for an insightful lecture and a “Meet the Expert” session with TRR259 students. He shared his latest research on the protein APRIL and its role in cardiovascular diseases, highlighting its importance in immune system functions related to heart health. The event offered students a unique opportunity to engage with cutting-edge research and gain valuable knowledge from an expert in molecular medicine.
