University, a safer space?
Do academic spaces exist outside of power relations? We offer a place for participants to reflect on what gives people power (or not) and how the oppressive systems we live in shape our means of researching, teaching and learning with one another. The urgency for these conversations to happen is backed up by a recent survey (2022) that revealed high rates of discrimination reported by students. The workshop holds space for personal experiences in academia, but also perspectives on what needs to happen for uni to be antiracist, antisexist, anticlassist and antiableist.

Imposter Syndrome – Why your brain is lying to you
In the lecture, possible causes of the so-called imposter syndrome – the recurring thought that one is simply not good enough for the current position and cannot fulfill the associated tasks – will be presented. The main thesis is that the imposter syndrome is based on 'thought errors'. 'Thought errors' are thoughts that appear helpful and benevolent on the one hand but produce a negative effect on closer inspection. The aim of the lecture is to give the audience a deeper understanding of how the imposter syndrome develops and to share strategies on how to deal with it.

Coping with stress, anxiety and self-doubt
Academic life can be stressful, overwhelming and frustrating: lots to do, rejections, revisions, teaching, fixed-term contracts plus grant and job applications. Against the backdrop of cognitive and neuroscience research, we explore what causes these negative emotions. In a second step, we consider options for dealing with and handling negative emotions. Sounds touchy-feely – so why bother? Because the greater your capacity to handle negative emotion, the greater your levels of success – in academia and beyond.

Team Communication in Intercultural Contexts for Women
“I thought we were on the same page? Now what is he talking about…?” How a person says and hears something may well be different to the way in which it was intended to be said and heard. How a person perceives himself may be different to how others perceive him. Such contradictory perceptions can lead to confusion, disagreement, and even conflicts. In the increasingly intercultural world of science and academic research, there are many occasions for misunderstanding. This workshop focuses on the team, on communication and on cultural influences as the most significant aspects for being heard and understood within your own working community.

Workshop: Gender, Power and Communication”
Success in academia does not depend on academic merits alone. The way how academics communicate and lead is equally important. The objective of this workshop is to create an initial understanding of this core competence - with a particular focus on gender aspects of leadership styles. The seminar introduces the concept of “vertical” and ”horizontal” communication (D. Tannen, P. Modler) in order to understand why - in general perception - men and women communicate and act differently in a professional setting. Women often feel that they do not succeed professionally in a similar way as men do. Whereas men underestimate the need to empower others, women leaders very often hesitate to apply “status” and “territory” as efficient tools of leadership! The workshop helps participants to understand their own style of communication with the ultimate aim of finding the right balance and of employing the right approach in the given context.

WORKSHOP: Berufungsverhandlungen an Medizinischen Fakultäten
