This year´s 1st International Symposium of the TRR259 took place on March 12, 2020 at the University Hospital in Bonn. We had assembled an outstanding list of speakers, both from abroad and within the TRR259. Due to the restrictions due to the Coronavirus, most participants followed the entire lectures simultaneously on their own screens in Cologne and Düsseldorf.
The focus of the symposium was on the research of the development of aortic disease. The symposium provided a platform for exchange and networking in this field. Besides distinguished invited speakers from Germany and Belgium, the 1st International Symposium of the TRR259 specifically welcomes young researchers and doctoral students for whom it provides a friendly atmosphere and opportunities to interact with more established colleagues.
Prof. Bert Callewaert from the Center for Medical Genetics of the University of Ghent, opened the event with a talk about “Arterial tortuosity and its connection with the extracellular matrix”. He was giving in insight into the arterial tortuosity syndrome and the actual hypotheses about the underlying mechanisms of this syndrome. Therefore he was talking about GLUT10 that is involved in the development of the arterial tortuosity syndrome and other novel genes that seems to be also involved.
PD Dr. Jennifer Eßer, from the Clinic for Cardiology & Angiology I of the University Heart Center in Freiburg was giving an interesting talk about “The bone morphogenetic protein (BMP) signaling pathway during aortic aneurysm development”. The cell-specific effect of the extracellular BMP growth factors during the progression of aortic aneurysm formation is unclear. She showed how they characterize the BMP signaling pathway during thoracic aortic aneurysm development in order to understand which role it has during the pathogenesis of aortic aneurysms.
PD Dr. Sebastian Zimmer from the Clinic for Internal Medicine II of the University of Bonn and Dr. Christine Quast from the Division of Cardiology, Pulmonology and Vascular Medicine of the University of Düsseldorf (via Livestream) both members of the TRR259 gave insights into “Animal models for aortic stenosis and aortic aneurysms”. They gave information about cardiovascular imaging and phenotyping.
Prof. Stefan Offermanns, director of the Department of Pharmacology of the Max Planck Institute for Heart and Lung Research in Bad Nauheim, was talking about “Biomechanics of flow-dependent vascular tone regulation and atherogenesis”. Next to G-proteins he shows data about Adrenomedullin mediating flow induced effects.
We thank all speakers and participants for contributing to our 1st International Symposium of the TRR259 – Aortic Disease. The next International Symposium of the TRR259 will take place in Cologne in 2021.
